Flagstaff Plumber – How To Unclog A Garbage Disposal

In this article on Flagstaff Plumber, we will discuss what to do in the event that your garbage disposal gets clogged.

So you are in the middle of cooking dinner, you’ve got pots on the stove, vegetables diced on the cutting board, and things are ready to go. You’ve also got the water running and a bunch of veggie detritus in the sink so you decide to flip on the garbage disposal. And… nothing. You hear a distance electric hum but nothing is happening in your sink, other than that it is filling up with sudsy water and your veggie pieces are starting to swirl around in the muck. You’ve got a clog in your garbage disposal. What do you do?

If you have got a clogged garbage disposal, the main is not to panic. This is very common plumbing problem and usually easily dealt with.

Some tools that you might need include: a pair of kitchen tongs, a wooden spoon, and a plunger.

Before doing anything else, make sure you turn off the water and the disposal. For safety reasons, you should also reach under the sink and physically unplug the garbage disposal. Make sure your hands are dry first. The disposal should be plugged in via a regular electric cord to an outlet under the sink.

The next step is to remove the plastic splash guard that covers the entrance to the disposal at the bottom of the sink. In most sinks, this is something that easily slides out with a little tug. If you have a flash light handy, you can shine a light into the drain to see if anything is blocking the drain. Don’t put your hand in there though. The disposal blades are sharp and you don’t want to risk getting cut.

The best way to reach into the drain is to usa a pair of tongs or a long wooden kitchen spoon. In a kitchen, these are usually nearby and will protect you from harm. The tongs can help you lift out any objects that may be clogging the drain. If you can’t see anything, trying using the wooden spoon to rotate the disposal blades back and forth. Sometimes a small vegetable fragment or bone can get wedged in the disposal and prevent the motor from turning. Rotating it blades back and forth can sometimes free it.

If this doesn’t work, then the clog is probably deeper in the system. Turn on the water and let the sink fill up, if it isn’t already. Then use a plunger repeatedly to try to clear the blockage. If this step is successful, then you are in luck. Let the sink drain and then run the water for a little while longer to flush out the drainage system.

If this doesn’t work, then it is time to check the pipes under the sink. The p-trap assembly under the sink is fairly easy to dismantle. But if you aren’t comfortable doing this, it may be time to call the plumber.

In order to prevent future clogs, it is helpful to follow these steps when operating your disposal.
1. Turn on the water water first and let it run for a bit before turning on the disposal. This makes sure the disposal system is wet enough to keep food from sticking to the inside or to the pipes. Now and then, flush out the disposal with warm water. This will help dislodge and accumulated debris.

It is also recommended to periodically pour a mixture baking soda and vinegar down the drain. This helps clean the disposal and remove any odors. Sprinkle the baking soda first, then pour the vinegar to start the reaction. Finally wash it out with warm water. At my house, we also like to occasionally drop citrus peels into the disposal. Whether or not it does any good, it certainly makes things smell nice.

Flagstaff Plumber – How to Stop a Leak Until the Plumber Arrives

A leak in the plumbing is a common home problem. Leaks can be the result of a burst pipe, cracked pipe, leaking faucet or shower head, and more. When you have a leak that requires the services of a plumber, it is essential that you stop it right away before the water causes damage to the home or causes a drastic increase to your water bill. The following is a guide on stopping a leak until the plumber arrives to fix it:

Once you detect a water leak, the first thing you should do is turn off the main water valve. This will stop the water from continuing to leak and causing more of a mess. The main water valve is located near the water meter. Once you have turned off the main water valve, open the faucet to allow the pressure to decrease. The remaining water in the pipes will flow through and once there is no more water pressure, there will be no pressure to push any remaining water through the damaged pipe or damaged plumbing fixture.

Once you have successfully stopped the water leak, contact the plumber. If the pipe leak is small enough, there are measures you can take to temporary stop the leak until the plumber arrives to fix it. The following is a guide on temporary fixing leaky pipes:

Epoxy: You can use epoxy to stop a leaky pipe. It is effective for sealing leaks at pipe fittings and joint fittings. Make sure the water has drained and the area is dry before sealing the leak. Also, you should clean it with steel wool. Use plenty of epoxy and then wait for it to cure.

Duct Tape or Electrical Tape: You can temporarily stop a pipe leak by wrapping electrical tape and duct tape around the crack in the pipe. Make sure the pipe is drained and dry and then wrap it tight around the pipe until the leak is completely covered. Make sure that you start wrapping a few inches away from the leak and then continue down the pipe until you are 2 inches past the leak to ensure you have adequately covered the leak. It should be wrapped a few times and make sure that each wrap is completely tight.

Pipe Clamp: To fix a big crack, get a pipe clamp and a piece of bicycle tire tubing. First, cut the tube so that it is big enough to fit around the crack causing the leak. Take a pipe clamp and secure the tube around the leak. The tube will contain the leak until the plumber arrives.

C-Clamp and Blocks: First, place a rubber pad over the leak area. Then, place a small wooden strip on top of it. Use the c-clamp to hold it all in place. The wooden strip will protect the pipe from the pressure of the c-clamp.

These repairs might stop a leak for a few days, but it is essential that you contact a professional plumber who will be able to permanently fix the leak.
